Burning fields
8/96: Malaysian Rainforest. Sabah, Malaysia. Burning off the fields before planting. This technique has been employed for centuries by native peoples in Borneo and is an excellent way of regenerating poor tropical soils. They also use sophisticated crop rotations. But the government of Malaysia and Indonesia often maintain that it is these fires, not deforestation, that destroys rainforest, despite clear scientific evidence to the contrary.
