Mr. Holland had his “opus”, and Now Mr. Gregg Randall, former band director of Las Cruces High School, has his Symphony.

For many years former members of the Las Cruces High school Band have talked about honoring Gregg Randall, our band teacher, and getting the “band” together one more time to celebrate his contributions to our lives.

Well, the talking is over. On July 4th, 1998, we are assembling members of the Las Cruces High School Band 1955-77 to engage in activities honoring Mr. Randall. These activities will honor Gregg Randall and also provide an opportunity for over twenty years of “the band” to get together “one more time.”

The days’s activities begin at 1:30 p.m. at the Las Cruces High School parking lot in front of the building. There, past band members will assemble the “All American Symphonic Band” to (hopefully) play a few pieces of music and maybe even march. And maybe not. Many of “the band” members have not touched an instrument since they graduated. And for many of us that day was long, long ago. Many others have continued their music and even have played professionally. Following that effort, there will be a small reception to talk and examine the new facilities. An initial presentation to Mr. Gregg Randall will be made at that time. This will adjourn at 4:30 p.m. The public is welcome to come.

Following the afternoon events, there will be a dinner/reception at 6:00 p.m. at the Farm and Ranch Heritage Museum at 4100 Dripping Springs Road. There will be several groups featured consisting of band members who have continued to play. At 7:30 p.m. there will be a catered dinner and various presentations honoring Mr. Randall and his wife,

There will be pictures, albums, T-shirts with a unique specially created logo, and memorabilia available at the event.

An attempt has been made to locate band members spanning the twenty plus years — from 1955-1977 — that Mr. Randall was the band director. Many people from across the nation are coming and have sent special messages discussing how Mr. Randall influenced their lives. In addition many parents of band members have expressed their interest in attending and will be making the trip. These parents were the backbone of the band and assisted at all activities.

Among the dozens of statements already received as part of this celebration, Gayla Weaver notes, “Mr. Randall was one of the most significant people in my life. Although the countless hours of marching and practicing was hard, the discipline and team work we had under his direction taught me important life lessons.” Ms. Mary Bullard writes,“Performing in a band and listening to bands perform are two of my favorite pastimes. ... I’ve always felt that I have been very fortunate to have experienced the cooperation and competition of being in a band.” Stephanie Eubanks writes, “Band was my place to belong to in high school. ... I loved it.”

Mr. Randall was the band director at Las Cruces High School when LCHS was the only high school in town and a few years after the advent of Mayfield. His bands achieved national acclaim, being ranked in the top fifty bands in the United States, and were invited to numerous bowl appearances. His students won many state and national honors. Mr. Randall himself has been recognized as an outstanding band leader. His achievements and the achievements of the band were an ongoing honor to Las Cruces.

All events are open to the public. We encourage all of Las Cruces and Doña Ana to attend and participate in honoring Gregg Randall. Also, if you were in the band or know of someone who was, please call us and let us know. Also, please call them and encourage their participation. We want to see everyone there and many people are lost to us. Call (505) 521-4564 for further information. The cost for the dinner and the plaques and memory album is $28.00. The afternoon events are free. We want to see you and Mr. Randall wants to see you — the members of this community and his symphony.
