Temporary Front Door — Demonstration
[information has not been updated for 2011–2012]
This is demonstration home page whose appearance matches the rest of the site. Page colors and background graphics derive directly from the printed colloquium flyers. We could just as well retain the old home page with the black background and big buttons ... or perhaps a similar home page with updated buttons and, perhaps, other pictures. The sample of changing picture at the right could be larger.
Another option is to have a home page similar to this one with some short headlines or news items on it.
This proposed new site will contain all the material and links from the old site. (For this demonstration purpose only, text has not yet been brought up to date and a few archived files are not yet linked.) The organization is slightly improved but should still seem familiar to loyal visitors. An unseen difference is that the underlying code and structure is streamlined, so there should be no need for a “text only” duplicate site. The streamlining will greatly facilitate time (and costs) of updates throughout the year.
Advantages to the new site:
- cleaner look
- better use of space on the pages (more compact)
- more up-to-date style (the old one was MetaGlyfix’s FIRST [!] web site, and it is more than a bit long in the tooth)
- stylistically better match with the conference sitelets
- technically better constructed -- you may not see it, but it will pay off in that major and minor changes to content or appearance should be less complicated than for the old site
- uses the Agrarian Studies signature background as a header
I'm open for any suggestions -- graphic or otherwise -- if you like the general layout. For instance, the brownish-orange for some of the headlines might be oranger or brighter than you like. We could use something like that dark brown from the old site. The green buttons, header, and navigation text could be another design or size or color if you prefer. (I tried to get as close a match as I could to some past Colloquium flyer colors). Are font sizes generally too large or too small? Etc.
